Adam Prout Manager of Three Town Tours sends details of new historical tours of Plymouth:
Three Town Tours will be offering customers an approx one hour tour; starting off by Captain Jaspers and finishing by the old band stand on the Hoe. We have info dating back to the Seasonal Nomadic Hunter Gathers whom used the caves at Cattedown to hunt on Dartmoor and the Bronze Age settlement at Mount Batton. T3 will focus in mainly upon Elizabethan, Civil War and Blitz history of Plymouth. We are obviously called Three Town Tours because of the merging of the “three Towns”; Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport and will show the different past’s of these towns. T3 will be discussing the importance of the Port, for the town’s development and how Plymouth was the start point for so many epic journeys’. Sir Francais Drake, Sir John Hawkins and even Pocahontas all have ties to the Port of Plymouth.
The Citadel is an obvious majestic sight upon the Hoe and customers will be told about the incredible siege which Plymouth suffered throughout the English Civil War. Townsfolk even swore an oath to die before allowing the Crown to take the Town. It can even argued that the Citadel was built; following the restoration of King Charles II to keep the people of Plymouth in check, rather than a defence of the realm. The Tour will then meander behind Valentines Cafe and customer will get to learn about the spot of the last public execution in Plymouth in 1797.
Upon the Hoe, the Tour will discuss the legend of Gog and Magog, all the war memorials, the epic tale of the lighthouses upon Eddystone reef, how Napoleon was imprisoned on HMS Bellephrone for two weeks before his exile to St Helena and the Breakwater.
Tours will run daily from 12, 1.30, 3 and 4.40, with more tours to be created with the summer holidays. At present it is just myself running the tours with friends and family helping with selling tickets and business expertise. I have a personal passion for our local history and realised how little is available to tourists and locals, and wanted to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of the great history of Plymouth.
Please feel to contact me with any further questions and if you and anybody would be interested to come on the tour, please contact me and we can arrange a time. My website will hopefully be launching next week on www.threetowntours.co.uk and i can also be found on facebook via http://www.facebook.com/threetowntours
