Plymouth’s Barbican will be hosting a weekend of pirate themed fun for all the family on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May.
At the heart of the activity will be the fantastic tall ship The Matthew, which will be berthed in Sutton Harbour for the weekend before setting sail to join the Queen’s Jubilee Pageant on the Thames in June.
Visitors will have the chance to go on board The Matthew to explore the ship and get a taste of life as a pirate.
Plymouth Waterfront Partnership is putting on a packed programme of entertainment to coincide with The Matthew’s visit, with plenty of swashbuckling activities for everyone to join in with.
Included in the schedule are re-enactment displays, smugglers ‘splicing’ demonstrations, fascinating talks, storytelling and a best dressed pirate competition for under 16’s, judged at 3pm each day at The Matthew.
Children in pirate fancy dress will receive free entry to the National Marine Aquarium on both days, and there will also be a Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike making mischief amidst the crowds on the Barbican.
Sarah O’Leary, Waterfront Manager said: “We’re very excited to welcome The Matthew to Plymouth before she heads off to join the Queen’s Jubilee Pageant – and would like to thank Sutton Harbour Marina for supporting the event by letting her berth there. Building on the success of the visit of the Bounty last year, we wanted to celebrate The Matthew’s arrival with another weekend of Pirate themed family fun. This great event will bring lots of visitors to the Waterfront and create a fantastic lively atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.”
The Matthew will be open from 10am – 4pm on the Saturday and Sunday, with a small donation to The Matthew required to board the ship.
Charlotte Malcolm, Commercial Marketing Manager at Sutton Harbour added: “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming The Matthew into historic Sutton Harbour. The hosting of events such as these adds to the vibrancy of the Barbican and Historic Harbour and is a fantastic way of attracting visitors to our stunning waterfront city.”
Activities on the Barbican will run from 10am – 5pm on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May. For a full programme of activities taking place on each day, check the information point at The Matthew.

On the Barbican Waterfront website we’ll also keep you posted on the weekends events with a small team of volunteer photographers out amongst the crowds. We will also be posting more details on the Barbican Pirate Days Event Section where you can also see photos from last years Pirate event.
This is one event not to be missed!
