Female berth holders have been getting some top boating tips at a special Ladies’ Day run by Sutton Harbour Marina in Plymouth and the Royal Yachting Association.
Ten women took part in the sessions on Wednesday (23 May), which were held as a part of the RYA’s Active Marina Programme at Sutton Harbour Marina and led by RYA instructor and fellow berth holder Wendy Langdon.
The training covered lock passage, picking up a mooring, manoeuvring and berthing, to help the ladies improve in confidence when entering and exiting Sutton Harbour lock and manoeuvring their boats around the marina and Plymouth Sound.
The day included lunch at harbourside brasserie Zucca, giving the berth holders a chance to socialise and get to know each other.
Sutton Harbour Marina Manager Mark Brimacombe said: “The Active Marina Programme is all about encouraging berth holders to boost their confidence and knowledge so they can make the most out of their boat. Following the excellent feedback we received from the launch of the programme earlier in May, we wanted to give some of our female berth holders the chance to take part in a ladies-only day, with tailored training.”
Sutton Harbour’s Active Marina programme is set to continue throughout the summer, with an Olympic-themed ‘Sail for Gold’ event planned for July to celebrate the London 2012 Games.
Sutton Harbour Marina is owned by waterfront regeneration company Sutton Harbour Holdings plc, and has grown from 250 to 490 berths in just five years. It has also recently been awarded five Gold Anchors by the Yacht Harbour Association for the high standards of its services and facilities.
Among those taking part in the Ladies’ Day was Sutton Harbour Marina berth holder Julia Rowley, who said: “The Ladies’ Day was a great chance to brush up on my boat handling skills, and it was lovely to meet some of the other women who have berths here at Sutton Harbour. Wendy was a brilliant trainer and all the staff at Sutton Harbour were all very welcoming – I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for future Active Marina events to take part in.”
