Plymouth Armed Forces Day Flag Handover 2012As Plymouth makes its final preparations for hosting the Armed Forces Day National Event on Saturday 30 June, organisers are asking people to plan their travel for the big day.

With thousands expected to head to the Hoe for a packed day of family entertainment and spectacular military displays, visitors are being urged to plan their journeys in advance and use public transport wherever possible.

First Devon and Cornwall is offering free travel to anyone wearing military uniform, including cadets, on its Plymouth buses all day.

Plymouth Citybus is also offering free travel to military personnel in uniform across its network. Those not in uniform can get a child fare on Citybus services by showing their military ID, as can veterans wearing their Veterans Badge.

All bus companies will be accepting Concessionary Travel Passes as normal.

The Citybus service 25 will be running on a loop between Royal Parade and the Hoe every 10 minutes from 8am until 6.45pm. It will leave from stop A9 (near Pizza Hut) and stop at Bretonside Bus Station, Southside Street, the Citadel, Hoe Road (the seafront) and West Hoe, before heading back to Royal Parade. There will be a flat fare of £1 for a single journey.

Extra park and ride buses are being provided for the event and hours have been extended, with services running every 10 minutes until 6.30pm and every 20 minutes between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. They offer a fast and direct service to Royal Parade from Coypool, the George Junction and Milehouse.

Most city centre car parks will be open as normal but are expected to be busy. The Guildhall car park will be closed from 6am to 8pm on Friday 29 June and there will be no parking on Armada Way (in front of the Guildhall). The Civic Centre car park will be closed from 6am to 8pm on Saturday 30 June. No vehicles are to be left in any of these areas.

A number of road closures will be in place around the Hoe and Barbican.

Citadel Road will be closed between the junction of Lockyer Street and Sussex Street. A diversion will be in place.

People who need assistance reaching the event can use the Council car park on Pier Street, which will be reserved for Blue Badge holders only. Access Plymouth will be running a free minibus transfer service from this car park to the top of Elliot Street from 8am until 10.20am (or earlier if the car park fills up).

When Pier Street car park is full, Blue Badge holders can park in city centre car parks and request a minibus pick-up by calling Access Plymouth on 01752 600633. However the minibus only has space for one wheelchair and up to nine seated customers and is likely to be very busy, especially during the morning. High demand may cause delays so passengers are asked to allow plenty of time.

Access Plymouth is also providing mobility scooter and manual wheelchair hire. For more information see our Disabled access page.
