A line-up of star chefs has been unveiled as one of the highlights of the inaugural Plymouth Seafood Festival taking place in September.
The historic quaysides will come alive on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September for two days of mouth-watering food, fun and entertainment putting the spotlight on Plymouth’s thriving fishing industry and locally caught seafood which is hauled in from the boats every day.
The Plymouth Seafood Festival, organised by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, forms a central part of the wider Plymouth Marine City Festival which runs from September 8 to 16.
At the heart of the Plymouth Seafood Festival will be the cookery theatre stage on Commercial Wharf, The Barbican, featuring some of the best chefs in the South West demonstrating their skills using the finest in locally sourced ingredients. The line-up includes Plymouth chefs Chris and James Tanner, Channel 4’s Three Hungry Boys, Master Chef of Great Britain Peter Gorton, plus a who’s who of head chefs from some of Plymouth’s finest Waterfront eateries. Chris Tanner, from Tanners and the Barbican Kitchen said: “I’m really looking forward to showing what you can do with the amazing diversity of seafood from around Plymouth’s shores at the Plymouth Seafood Festival.”
Alongside the cookery theatre stage there will be tasty food stalls offering everything from fish curries through to locally caught crab. The festival will feature live music, street entertainment and cool marine science, providing a packed programme of fun for all the family.
Plymouth Waterfront Partnership has also created a nine day Seafood Trail of more than 30 restaurants and cafes across the Waterfront area showcasing delicious seafood dishes throughout the Festival.
There will be plenty for children to do with Plymouth University and the National Marine Aquarium taking science out on to the street with their JustAddH2O Family STEM Festival designed to make the story of seafood and marine science come alive.
Sarah O’Leary, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership Manager, said: “The Plymouth Seafood Festival celebrates our fantastic Waterfront and Plymouth’s growing reputation as a gourmet hotspot with the finest quality seafood and locally sourced ingredients served by an amazing array of talented chefs and restaurants.
“Creating a festival unique to Plymouth and its Waterfront was one of the key priorities as part of the Waterfront Business Improvement District (BID). Our aim is to develop the Plymouth Seafood festival into a major annual event showcasing the city and its Waterfront and helping drive visitor numbers and economic growth.”
Deputy Council leader Councillor Peter Smith said: “Top chefs, top food and a top idea. Bringing all these ingredients together on our waterfront is a recipe for success. This is not just a great idea for visitors, but a chance for local people to sample some of the fabulous food that gets served, day-in day-out in our great cafes and restaurants.”
The wide-ranging Plymouth Marine City Festival, organised by Destination Plymouth, (www.marinecityfestival.co.uk) will run from September 8-16 and brings together visitor events, business exhibitions and the world leading Oceans of Potential marine science conference on the Hoe, an initiative of Plymouth’s marine science organisations and coordinated by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML).
It is aiming to attract thousands of visitors to Plymouth historic quayside areas and to highlight nationally and internationally the city’s standing as a leading European marine city for research, leisure, heritage and food.
The Festival will take in a wide range of Waterfront and City Centre sites – including The Barbican, Sutton Harbour, The Hoe, Royal William Yard and Mount Edgcumbe – to create a unique celebration of Plymouth and its links to the sea.
As well as the first Plymouth Seafood Festival, it includes the return of the Ecover Blue Mile, a programme of music and arts throughout the week, an outdoor cinema screen at Royal William Yard, a colourful parade through the Barbican on Saturday September 8, a public debate on the future of our seas chaired by BBC broadcaster Monty Halls and a public lecture by a previous Chief Scientific Advisor of the UK Environment Agency.
