The Barbican Theatre in Plymouth are putting out the call for young people aged between 14 and 25 years of age to become the new dance and theatre young apprentices for the next year.
If you went to see the city-wide partnership summer production, The World At Your Feet, then you will have seen the theatre’s Young Apprentices in action as they were all involved in acting and dancing in the show – up to sixty young people from the Young Apprentice companies took part in ten outdoor performances in July. They also performed to a crowd of 50,000 people during the Olympic Torch relay celebrations on the Hoe.
Becoming a young apprentice might sound daunting but the whole idea is to give young people, regardless of experience, the chance to develop skills in theatre and dance techniques, choreography, devising and performances – so if you think you might have what it takes to become part of a training company then now is your chance.
Audition workshops for both the theatre and dance Young Apprentice companies are taking place at the end of September but there is also the chance to attend an open evening session on September 18th between 6pm and 8pm to find out a little bit more about what it all actually entails before you put yourself up for audition.
The dance Young Apprentices meet on Tuesday evenings between 6pm and 9pm and the theatre Young Apprentices meet on Wednesday evenings, both between 6pm and 9pm, to learn more about theatre and dance with the opportunity to be part of a public performance next summer. There will also be the opportunity to learn about other aspects of the industry including lighting, sound, marketing and fundraising.
As an Arts Council England National Portfolio organisation, the theatre are passionate believers in sharing their practice, knowledge and skills wherever they can to reach new people and they are continuously working towards making theatre and dance that captures contemporary experiences and brings new voices out into the public arena.
If you would like to find out more, come along to the open evening, or if you want to go straight ahead and register for the audition workshops then go to our website, www.barbicantheatre.co.uk and fill out the registration form by following the link on the home page.
Young Apprentice dance auditions take place on Tuesday September 25th between 6pm and 9pm and the Young Apprentice theatre auditions take place on Wednesday September 26th between 6pm and 9pm. There is no need to prepare and audition piece as they will be workshop style auditions.
“If I hadn’t discovered the Young Apprentice company at the theatre then I would never have realised my true potential and I would never have met the people that I did. It was such an amazing opportunity and I will never forget it. I am now studying theatre at university and loving every minute of it. The skills I learnt at the Barbican were invaluable and gave me the confidence to carry on with my chosen career”
