On Sunday 16 September, after a fantastic weekend of entertainment for all the family at the first ever Plymouth Seafood Festival, local Barbican traders will compete in a charity raft race to add that final bit of fun to close the festival.
Organised by the Association of Barbican Businesses, the race will be sure to have elements of both suspense and comedy. Each raft has been built by the traders themselves so not only will they be testing their on-water racing skills but also the seaworthiness of their vessels.
Special guest Jonty Depp, aka Captain Jack Sparrow, will get the race underway at around 4pm from the Mayflower Steps. The course will require the traders to get their raft to Commercial Wharf, around a buoy and back to the Steps in order to take the title.
Barbican traders are encouraging visitors to the Plymouth Seafood Festival to stay on and watch the race which they hope will bring a host of laughs as the traders endeavour to stay afloat and win.
Clare Phillips, who will be competing with the Barbican Belles team on Sunday said “All proceeds raised from the race will be going towards the RNLI. The work that the RNLI does to support Maritime Plymouth is exceptional, and we want to be able to raise as much money as we can to support them. We urge anyone in and around Plymouth to visit the Seafood Festival and also come along to support our raft race. It’s sure to be a fun weekend for the whole family.”
Sarah O’Leary, Waterfront Manager, added “Plymouth Waterfront Partnership has organised the Plymouth Seafood Festival, a key annual project from the Waterfront Business Plan, and it’s great to see local businesses getting behind it, creating their own events to enhance the fun and vibrant atmosphere. We’re looking forward to an exciting weekend on the historic quayside and encourage visitors of all ages to come along and join in the fun.”
In total around 8 teams will be taking to the water to do battle & compete against each other to win the glory and blagging rights of becoming… the Barbican Raft Race 2012 Champions!
