Students from City College Plymouth get involved in a brand re-fresh for Plymouth Barbican Waterfront, your local online community network.
This Valentine’s Day, Plymouth Barbican Waterfront community network is celebrating 7 years of being online and thanks to the help from City College Plymouth we now have a brand new logo to mark this special occasion.
From the very beginning, we always have been an independent, volunteer run online platform which sole purpose is to help promote this beautiful historic area of Plymouth to local residents and visitors alike. We strongly believe that along with rich history and incredible architecture, it’s the quirky, independent businesses that make this area so characterful and add life to the Barbican’s understated charm.
Since the social media accounts and website operate on not for profit basis, we always appreciate any kind offers of help from local businesses and organisations. We have always been keen to work with local students to help them gain hands-on working experience.
In the summer of 2017, we found out through a Devon Chamber of Commerce newsletter that the City College Plymouth were looking for local businesses keen to get involved in their graphic design project.
We contacted Justine Morgan – Associate Lecturer in Media at City College and expressed our interest, giving her students a brief to re-design our logos. It was a great pleasure to have worked with all the students who took on a very difficult task of refreshing the logos for our busy community networks, Plymouth Barbican Waterfront and Plymouth Hoe Waterfront under Justine’s watchful eye.
All of the participants showed great interest in the networks and this assignment. They took their time to understand the brief and completed a thorough research before meeting us which was a great sign of professionalism. During our brainstorming session they listened carefully and took all of our feedback on board which resulted in some fantastic and ambitious designs.
We were particularly impressed with the design developed by Ryan Lee. In fact, we loved it so much, that we had asked Ryan and City College’s permission to use it in our future branding. Ryan already has a lot of the qualities which make a great designer and a fantastic employee. We think he’ll do very well in the future, whichever career path he chooses to follow and wish him all the best of luck.

“Every year we link our students with external businesses to give them an authentic experience in the design process and to build their skills, portfolio and contacts. Eddystone Media was a fantastic support to our students this year, giving them feedback and professional advice throughout the design process. All our students produced great work but Ryan Lee’s designs were of a particularly high standard and we are extremely proud of his achievements. Seeing a student show their true potential and impress like Ryan has really is the best part of my job!”
Needless to say, this was a very positive experience and we would thoroughly recommend other businesses to get involved in such projects for their own and the students’ benefit. After all, at least at one point in our lives, we all needed someone to believe in us and give us a chance to show what we can do.
We hope that you love our new logo just as much as we do and here’s to many more years of celebrating the Barbican and all it has to offer.
