Christmas is slowly, but surely getting closer and the festive-looking Plymouth Barbican is the perfect location to shop and spend time with your friends and family. With the hustle and bustle of the busy high street, the Barbican is a true oasis of calmness where you can still enjoy a great community feel and friendly advice from the local shop owners. There is a great variety of small specialist shops offering unique gifts and a fantastic choice of restaurants, cafe’s and bars perfect for a get together.

In this feature, we celebrate what makes the Barbican so special – the small, independent businesses. A vast majority of businesses on the Barbican are family run and by choosing to shop local this festive season, you’re making theirs extra special too. Here are a few of the places we think you’ll love, so next time when you’re around, do take your time to explore the Barbican as there are plenty more gems like these to be found.

Harbourside Fish and Chips

“Merry Fishmas” from this award winning fish and chips restaurant.

Christmas is time for sharing, time for giving and spending precious moments with your family and loved ones. It’s time for eating all your favourite foods without having to worry about your waistline. Without a doubt, fish and chips is one of the most celebrated and popular English dishes, enjoyed by many and if you like it just as much as we do, you must try out the award winning Harbourside Fish and Chips. Situated in the very heart of Barbican’s busy Southside Street, this recently refurbished restaurant stole the hearts of many locals and visitors by serving fresh, sustainable fish, cooked to perfection.

They pride themselves in serving quality meals and offer a great choice for all ages, available to eat in or to take away. From children’s meals to all of the nation’s favourites including succulent cod or line caught haddock which can be enjoyed grilled or lightly battered, homemade fish cakes, sea food platters, sausages, burgers, pies and of course mouthwatering chips and homemade mushy peas. As part of their plan to support healthy eating, the restaurant has switched to using groundnut oil, a thinner oil that drains from the fish easier. Harbourside also offers a good choice of healthier options by introducing jacket potatoes, side salad and chargrilled fish or chicken as opposed to fried.

“Our fish comes from sustainable fishing grounds like Iceland, Norway and Barents Sea and it is filleted and frozen within 2 or 3 hours of being caught. It’s fresher than fresh.

We honestly try our hardest to make sure we supply the healthiest possible meal to our customers; we cook as fresh as possible to compliment our product so you get it as it’s meant to be and we top it off with a smile.”

As a multiple finalist and winner of the past National Fish and Chip Awards for their commitment to investing in staff training and development as well as for being given the Healthy Eating Award, Harourside sets the bar high for others. The conteporary yet comfortable upstairs seating area offers the customers a chance to enjoy their favourite meals in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. A great variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages is also on offer. The spacious dining area   is perfect for parties and all sorts of ‘get togethers’ all year around. You can even book your table online!
