The Plymouth Barbican is filled with Art Galleries and Shops staffed by friendly traders who are more than happy to help. Not sure what to buy the parents? Run out of ideas what to buy your partner? How about something unique?! With a huge wide range of Shops to choose from a brisk walk around the historic Barbican harbour will give you plenty of ideas to choose from.

After picking up a few items don’t forget there are also plenty of places to put your feet up for a coffee or a bite to eat. Check out our extenstive range of Cafes, Restaurants and Take Away options.

The popular Plymouth Barbican Late Shopping Evening returns on 4th December 2014. A wide range of art galleries & shops will be open until 8pm on these nights.

Yes, you could go online, you could pop into a major retailer and grab what everyone is grabbing or you can take a stroll on the Plymouth Barbican. Pick up a few items from a local Plymouth trader and follow this with a rest up in a Cafe / Restaurant / Pub before heading home…

The Events: Thanksgiving and Christmas

Thanksgiving Ceremony and Christmas Light Switch on – 27th November 2014…
Plymouth Barbican Thanksgiving 2013This year we have the Thanksgiving Cermony and Christmas lights switch on being held on Thursday 27th November 2014. The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Lord Mayor’s Parlour will mark the annual Thanksgiving ceremony by laying a wreath at the historic Barbican Mayflower Steps at 5.30pm. Soon after a traditional carol service on the Barbican Parade will begin to launch ‘Christmas in the harbour’. Visitors will also see a large ‘Mayflower’ themed christmas tree on the Barbican parade.

The Christmas tree lights will be switched on around 6pm and be followed by more carol singing, readings, poems and a visit from a special guest, the man himself, Santa :).

This event will create a warm festive family atmosphere on the Barbican and Sutton Harbour.

Mayflower Harbor

The Plymouth Barbican has strong ties with America. The famous Mayflower ship in 1620 set sail with 102 passengers and 30 crew members for America. These pilgrims settled on what is now known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Darwin and Mayflower Trails – Throughout December 2014
There is a chance to learn about Plymouth’s history and win prizes too! A Mayflower trail highlighting locations where the Pilgrim Fathers are believed to have stayed and visited before their voyage aboard the Mayflower Ship in 1620 to America, based around the Mayflower inspired Christmas tree on the Barbican.

And a Darwin trail highlighting key facts about Darwin’s two month stay in Plymouth in 1831. This trail will take you from the Royal William Yard (where their will be a huge Christmas Tree), Devil’s Point Park and the Plymouth Hoe.

The trail will be available to download or to collect from the Tourist Information Centre on the Barbican. Anyone entering the competition at the end will have to complete both the Barbican and Royal William Yard trails to enter the prize draw at the end.

Lots of prizes will be up for grabs 🙂
