The Plymouth Barbican has strong ties with America. The famous Mayflower ship in 1602 set sail with 102 passengers and 30 crew members for America. These pilgrims settled on what is know as Plymouth, Massachusetts. You can read more about this remarkable journey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayflower.

In America, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition traces its origins to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts.

Thanksgiving Day – Plymouth 2012

Dave Saunders has the following update for this years thanksgiving days celebrations:

Thursday November 22th 2012 at Plymouth Guildhall for a short flag raising ceremony with the Plymouth Pipe Band, a bugler from 6 rifles, Captain Stracener from the US Embassy (tbc), HMS Drake + a local school band playing the Star Spangled Banner. There will be about 40 local schoolchildren present. The entire Mayoral team and local Councillors will be present. More to come…..

Beryl the Bus to Barbican.

Then on to the Mayflower Steps at the Barbican for a 30 minute ceremony to mark the sailing of the Mayflower to the United States and celebrate American Thanksgiving here in Plymouth. A couple of speeches from visitors. Gary Platts plays Star Spangled Banner (Hendrix Style) Saggy Bottom Boys play the Janner Song. The Fisherman’s Arms will be hosting a lunch after.

Local pubs and restaurants will be serving special American theme food all day and traditional “Turkey Dinner” in the evenings.
