Kaya Gallery, situated on the Plymouth Barbican, offers a great selection of affordable classic and contemporary artwork from both local and national painters, sculptors and photographers.
Kaya’s artistic ambitions lie simply in presenting a diverse range of exciting and inspiring art, both original and prints that will sit comfortably in your home. Work from leading South West artists sits comfortably alongside contemporary photography, and regular re-hangs ensure it is a lively gallery to visit.
Kaya Gallery has been trading on the Barbican for over 7 years and is now firmly established as one of the city’s leading art galleries.
Owner Norman Holmes, renowned for his encouraging friendly character has certainly helped develop the artistic fortunes of local South West artists such as Simon Bennett, Jane Vaux, David Gray, Dave Crocker, Claire Rice, Les Spence and glass artists Margaret Johnson and M & D Glass as well as just recently rising textile artist Jackie Gale and illustrator Stuart Mcghee. Leading Plymouth naïve artist Brian Pollard has also chosen Kaya as his main outlet for originals and prints.
Right from the start too, Kaya has showcased the work of local photographers with a range of stunning images from around our region.
As well as promoting local art via his column ‘Art Matters’ in a local ‘What’s On magazine, Norman is also a champion for the Barbican’s retail sector actively involved with both the ABB and PWP to help encourage more footfall to the area, whilst providing a better shopping experience.
Chatting to him last week I asked what he was planning this year to which he replied: ‘More of the same but even better!’ ‘After a difficult start to the year we are planning a series of exhibitions at Devonport Guildhall, a revamp of the website to help us sell on line, the creation of a ‘Drawn to the Barbican’ event and hopefully the introduction of work to the gallery from an internationally recognised artist, so watch this space!’
And we know when he says ‘watch this space’ it’ll be filled with something worth seeing!
